Is now the time to buy low on the Miami QB?
Going into last weekend, Miami quarterback Carson Beck sat as one of the favorites to win the Heisman trophy. Beck had started the season with 11 touchdowns to 3 interceptions in five games and had the Hurricane offense firing on all cylinders. Coming off of four touchdowns against rival Florida State, Beck had asserted himself as one of the favorites to win the award at +350 odds. Then, the Louisville game happened.
Beck’s worst performance of the season included four interceptions in the three-point loss to the Cardinals, with the close final score further emphasizing the importance of each pick. Miami only dropped to No. 9 in the country after the loss, but Beck’s Heisman odds took a nosedive. FanDuel now lists Beck at +5500, with DraftKings at slightly better +5000 odds.
With the drop in price for Beck’s Heisman odds, is now the time for the believers to buy in? It will be hard for the nation to forget that four-interception game against Louisville, but the Miami offense still has plenty of firepower to get Beck the stats to compare with whoever else is up for the honor at the end of the year. Miami also still has a strong chance to make the College Football Playoff with a still-Top 10 ranking and no more ranked teams on the schedule. That weak schedule can come with disadvantages when you’re campaigning for the Heisman, though. The lack of a big stage makes that “Heisman moment” harder to come by, and history shows you need to win the public over as well as stuff the stat sheet to take home the award.
If you believe in Carson Beck’s ability to lead this Miami team to a title, now is the time to get your Heisman bet in; there will be no better price than after a four-interception performance. He may not have a path to hoisting the hardware if he can’t build up the highlight reel to go with what should still end up as monster stats, as that can break the tie between Beck and the potential competition who are playing in bigger games through the year.
