Miami continues to push to flip DJ Jacobs from Ohio State

Miami’s pursuit of Ohio State commit DJ Jacobs is the kind of recruitment that can make everyone uncomfortable until signing day. The Buckeyes have the commitment. Miami is not pretending otherwise, but the Hurricanes keep hanging around one of the top defensive players in the 2027 class, and it’s the kind of swing Mario Cristobal should keep taking.

Jacobs committed to Ohio State in late December as one of the most important early pledges in the 2027 cycle. CBS Sports put him at the time as the No. 1 overall prospect in the class and Ohio State beat out Miami, Georgia, Oregon and Texas A&M, among others, for the commitment..

Ohio State has a real hold on the recruitment, and the Buckeyes have every reason to fight like crazy to keep him. Jacobs gives them a premier edge prospect and a defensive headliner for the class. A player like that changes how a class is perceived.

The Hurricanes can sell recent defensive line development, the program’s willingness to recruit elite defensive talent nationally and a path where Jacobs would become a centerpiece. Miami has also shown it will recruit through the whistle on blue-chip defensive players. If Jacobs keeps listening, the staff has to keep making the pitch.

Coaches talk development, scheme and opportunity. Recruits talk class-building, confidence and what it would feel like to win together. When a five-star defensive back already in Miami’s class like Donte Wright starts working on an Ohio State edge commit, it keeps pressure on the recruitment. Miami was involved before the commitment, hosted Jacobs after the commitment and still has current commits pushing him publicly.
