Miami Football Set To Open Season With 9 p.m. Matchup At Stanford

Miami football will open the 2026 season under the Friday night lights, but Hurricanes fans in South Florida may need coffee with their pregame routines.

The ACC announced Tuesday that Miami’s season opener at Stanford will kick off at 9 p.m. Eastern on Friday, Sept. 4, with ESPN carrying the game. That means a 6 p.m. local start in Stanford, California, but a late night for the Hurricanes’ East Coast fan base. A normal college football broadcast can stretch past three hours, so Miami fans should expect the opener to push close to, or past, midnight.

9 p.m. beats the dreaded 10:30 p.m. window, but not by much. It still changes the rhythm of opening night in the 305. Tailgates at home turn into late dinners. Families with younger fans face a tougher call. Anyone with early Saturday plans may need to negotiate with the alarm clock.

ESPN and the ACC clearly wanted Miami in a national window. The Hurricanes will travel west for one of the league’s two opening-week ACC matchups, with SMU at Florida State set for Monday, Sept. 7. Miami-Stanford gives the conference a standalone Friday night game and places the Hurricanes in front of a national audience before the first full Saturday of the season.

Miami enters 2026 with major expectations after announcing a schedule that starts at Stanford, continues with a short-week home game against Florida A&M the next Thursday, and then sends the Hurricanes to Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 18. The opener starts a strange first stretch with three games in 15 days, two road trips and two Friday kickoffs.

The Stanford trip also continues the ACC’s coast-to-coast reality. Miami fans spent decades thinking about conference road games in places like Tallahassee, Blacksburg, Chapel Hill and Atlanta. Now, the league sends the Hurricanes to Northern California for its conference opener.

Fans can want the spotlight of ESPN but hate the start time. Both things can exist, so clear the couch, charge the remote and plan the cafecito accordingly. The Hurricanes will start 2026 on ESPN, in California, and deep into the night for everyone watching back home.
