Miami did not need another reminder that shooting matters. The Hurricanes lived that lesson for long stretches last season, and Wednesday’s addition of Nick Dorn serves as a direct response.
Miami announced that Dorn is joining Jai Lucas’ program after spending his junior season at Indiana, where he appeared in 30 games, made 12 starts and averaged 8.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 23.2 minutes per game. He shot 38 percent from beyond the arc and knocked down 87 percent of his free throws. Those are the numbers of a player who can walk into a rotation and immediately make defenders care about the arc.
Lucas is not just stacking names; he is building toward a cleaner offensive identity. Dorn’s résumé says he can stretch the floor, and Miami’s coach called him a proven shot maker with size, toughness and feel in the school’s official statement. It’s the kind of profile this roster still needed after last season’s uneven perimeter production.
Dorn scored in double figures 11 times at Indiana and had several big late-season performances, including 23 points at Rutgers, 18 points and three steals against Purdue, and a season-high 26 points with seven rebounds at UCLA. This is not a developmental flier. It is a player with Big Ten minutes, real shot volume and enough offensive confidence to change how you defend.
Sports Illustrated framed the bigger picture well: Jai Lucas has spent this portal cycle trying to fix the exact weak points that kept Miami from looking complete. Shooting was one of them. Depth was another. Dorn addresses both. He gives the Hurricanes another wing who can make catch-and-shoot teams pay, but he also gives Lucas more freedom with lineup construction since Miami no longer has to rely on one or two shooters carrying the spacing burden every night.
Miami already had enough reason to believe Lucas understands roster building. Additions like Dorn show he also understands the unglamorous part of the job: fixing the exact things that cost you games before they cost you again.
