Miami pushed into future South Florida classes by offering Austin “Cali” Hawkins, a Class of 2031 athlete from Hollywood Christian School.
Hawkins announced the offer after competing at Miami’s camp over the weekend.
Mario Cristobal’s staff wants to evaluate South Florida prospects before national programs crowd the recruitment. Hawkins gives the Hurricanes another young local player to track through the early stages of his development.
Miami did not simply throw out an offer from afar. Hawkins worked in front of the staff, competed on campus and left Coral Gables with an offer. The staff got live reps, athletic testing and face-to-face interaction before making an early move.
Hawkins’ profile also explains the interest. He brings defensive back upside, but the athlete label makes sense at this stage. Young players with speed, ball skills and return ability often start with broad projections before settling into one position (and a more solidified ranking) later in high school. Miami can recruit him as a football player first and let his frame, skill set and production dictate his long-term spot.
The Broward County product already has other schools involved. On3/Rivals lists Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Ohio as programs that have offered.
Hawkins still has years of growth ahead, and his recruitment will change as he gets older, stronger and more polished. Rankings, measurements and position labels will shift. Still, the Hurricanes saw enough during camp to enter the recruitment now rather than wait.
