Five-star athlete A’mir Sears is reclassifying from 2028 to 2027 and will announce his college choice Friday at 5 p.m. Eastern. Miami remains among the schools in the race for the Columbus standout, but Sears has not committed and his finalists will not be revealed until the announcement.
Sears told Tom Loy of 247Sports that he is moving up a class and plans to enroll early at the school he chooses in December 2027. His most recent list included Miami, LSU, Texas A&M, Florida, Auburn, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and Syracuse. The compressed timeline turns a long underclassman recruitment into an immediate decision.
The reclassification moves one of the country’s most productive two-way players into Miami’s current recruiting cycle. Sears caught 42 passes for 942 yards and 11 touchdowns as a sophomore while recording 61 tackles, 11 pass breakups, three interceptions and a forced fumble. Those numbers give college staffs legitimate options instead of forcing an athlete label onto a player without a defined position.
USA TODAY’s composite had Sears No. 2 in the 2028 class before the move, and 247Sports rated him No. 1 overall, according to Joe Spears of USA TODAY. He now becomes the highest-ranked uncommitted player in the 2027 cycle by that measurement. Rankings will adjust after services place him against an older group, but the change does not erase the length, ball skills or production that built his profile.
Miami’s appeal starts with geography. Sears plays at Columbus in Miami, which gives the Hurricanes more chances to build the relationship without selling a distant family on South Florida. Local access does not make the decision automatic. National programs have recruited him for years, and an accelerated announcement can reward whichever staff built the strongest plan before the timeline changed.
The positional pitch will matter. Sears has the size and instincts to play cornerback, plus enough receiving production to demand offensive consideration. Miami must explain whether it sees him as a full-time defender, a two-way player or an athlete who will settle into one role after college practices begin. A vague promise to let him do everything will not be as persuasive as a development plan tied to snaps, technique and the roster.
The move also changes roster timing. A 2027 enrollee would arrive one year earlier than staffs originally planned, forcing every finalist to evaluate available scholarships, veteran depth and possible early playing time now. Miami’s advantage will come from showing Sears where the opportunity exists without promising a starting job before he plays his senior season.

Sears’ move guarantees the answer arrives sooner than anyone expected, and the Hurricanes have two days to finish the recruitment without pretending the decision has already been made.
