Darian Mensah will enter Miami’s preseason camp among the leading contenders for the 2026 Heisman Trophy after sportsbooks moved the Hurricanes quarterback near the top of the market.
A VegasInsider odds comparison updated Aug. 2 listed Mensah between 10-1 and 12-1 across six sportsbooks. Most books placed him at 11-1.
Those prices put Mensah in the first group behind Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr and Texas quarterback Arch Manning. Oregon quarterback Dante Moore, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin and Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss carried similar odds at several books.
At 11-1, a winning $100 wager would return $1,200, including $1,100 in profit. Those odds imply roughly an 8.3% chance before accounting for the sportsbook’s margin.
Mensah’s market position reflects a breakout 2025 season at Duke and the expectations surrounding his move to Miami. Mensah started all 14 games for Duke and passed for 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns and six interceptions.
He led the Blue Devils to the ACC championship and earned most valuable player honors in the conference title game and the Sun Bowl. He also received second-team All-ACC recognition and reached the semifinal round for the Davey O’Brien Award.
The ACC media strengthened Mensah’s preseason campaign in late July. Miami’s All-ACC announcement reported that Mensah received 97 of 188 votes for ACC Preseason Player of the Year. SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings finished second with 25 votes.
Media members also selected Miami as the conference favorite. The ACC preseason poll gave the Hurricanes 165 first-place votes.
That combination gives Mensah the team-success component that often drives Heisman campaigns. Quarterbacks who contend for the award usually pair elite production with conference championships, playoff contention and memorable performances in nationally televised games.
Mensah will operate with proven playmakers around him. Wide receiver Malachi Toney returns after recording 1,211 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns in 2025. Running back Mark Fletcher Jr. rushed for 1,192 yards and 12 scores.
Duke transfer Cooper Barkate also reunites with Mensah after catching 72 passes for 1,106 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Their previous connection should help Miami’s passing game establish rhythm early.
The schedule offers several national stages. Miami opens Sept. 4 at Stanford on ESPN, travels to Clemson on Oct. 3 and visits Notre Dame on Nov. 7. Strong performances in those games could move Mensah’s odds and strengthen his place in the national race.
Miami has produced two Heisman winners: Vinny Testaverde in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992. Cam Ward finished fourth in the 2024 voting after setting Miami single-season records for passing yards and touchdown passes.
Preseason odds provide a market snapshot rather than a forecast. Injuries, team results and weekly performances will reshape the race after kickoff. Mensah nevertheless enters August with national credibility, an experienced supporting cast and a clear path toward a high-profile campaign.
