Mohamed Toure was named to the 2026 Butkus Award preseason watch list Thursday after leading Miami in tackles during his first season with the Hurricanes.
The 51-player field represents 42 programs, according to Miami Athletics’ announcement. Nine ACC linebackers made the list. The Butkus Foundation will announce semifinalists Oct. 28, finalists Nov. 20 and the winner during the week of Dec. 7.
Toure started all 16 games in 2025 and made 84 tackles, including three tackles for loss and two sacks. He also broke up six passes. His season ended with 11 tackles against Indiana in the national championship game, matching the highest single-game total by a Miami defender all year.
The watch list recognizes more than volume. Toure played the position that connects every level of Corey Hetherman’s defense. He had to fit behind an aggressive line, carry routes into passing lanes and communicate when an offense changed formations. Miami will ask for the same range while replacing first-round edge rushers Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor.
Kamdyn Burton of CanesInSight noted that Toure has 248 tackles, 25.5 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks across his Miami and Rutgers career. The career history gives the Hurricanes a player who has already handled several versions of the linebacker job rather than one who built his résumé in a narrow package.
Toure also knows Hetherman’s system from their time at Rutgers. His official Miami profile credits him with 93 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in 2023 under the current Hurricanes coordinator. Toure’s prior connection can help the defense install answers quickly, but experience only becomes an advantage when the calls remain precise under pressure.
The Butkus race will demand more impact plays. Tackle totals establish reliability, but award voters also notice stops that end possessions, takeaways and pressure that changes a game. Toure can improve his case by turning correct reads into more tackles behind the line and by converting underneath coverage into pass breakups or interceptions.
Miami does not need him to chase statistics at the expense of the structure. A linebacker who abandons his responsibility to reach the ball can open the exact lane an offense wants. Toure’s value begins with making the correct fit routine, then attacking when the front creates a clean path.
The 51-player watch list intentionally matches the jersey number worn by Pro Football Hall of Famer Dick Butkus. Players who were not selected can still win the award, so Thursday’s announcement is a starting field rather than an elimination round. Former Miami star Dan Morgan won the Butkus Award in 2000, giving Toure a program standard as well as a national one.
Miami’s schedule will supply opportunities. Toure must handle Stanford’s opener, conference offenses that stress linebackers with motion and the late-season physical toll of another playoff pursuit. If he keeps the defense aligned while adding decisive plays, the watch-list recognition can survive each cut. For now, it confirms that the veteran at the center of Miami’s defense begins the season on the national radar.
