Miami freshman forward Zoie Fontenot wasted little time making an impact during her first college season.
The ACC named Fontenot its Freshman of the Week on Tuesday after the Long Beach, California, native scored in both of Miami’s road victories last week. Fontenot helped the Hurricanes defeat Little Rock 3-0 before delivering the winner in a 1-0 victory over Lipscomb.
Fontenot opened the scoring against Little Rock in the 22nd minute. She finished that match with three shots and placed two attempts on goal as Miami recorded its second consecutive victory.
Her next goal provided considerably more drama.
Miami and Lipscomb entered the final seconds locked in a scoreless match when Ciara Alarcon connected with Fontenot. The freshman finished the opportunity with one second remaining in regulation and gave Miami its third consecutive victory. The Hurricanes generated a 21-7 advantage in shots and placed nine attempts on goal during the win.
Fontenot recorded six shots, five shots on goal and two goals during the two-game stretch. Through the first four matches of her college career, she scored three goals and recorded two game-winners. Her three goals led all ACC freshmen when the conference announced its weekly honors.
The fast start also included her first collegiate goal against Florida Atlantic on Aug. 16. Fontenot struck in the 22nd minute of Miami’s 3-0 victory and helped launch the Hurricanes’ three-match winning streak.
Miami entered Thursday’s home opener against Incarnate Word with a 3-1 record and three consecutive shutouts.
Fontenot’s production gives Miami another young attacking option as the Hurricanes prepare for the tougher portion of their schedule. Her ability to create chances matters, but her early knack for finishing significant opportunities stands out even more.
Three goals through four college matches already represents an impressive opening stretch. Two game-winners add another layer.
Miami needs younger players to contribute if the Hurricanes want to make noise once ACC competition arrives. Fontenot has already given the coaching staff one freshman capable of changing matches.
Her first ACC weekly honor could mark only the beginning.
