Miami soccer needed nearly every second Sunday afternoon to extend its early-season winning streak.
Freshman Zoie Fontenot scored with one second remaining to lift the Hurricanes past Lipscomb 1-0 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex in Nashville, giving Miami its third consecutive victory after a season-opening loss.
With the match headed toward a scoreless draw, Ciara Alarcon found Fontenot during Miami’s final attacking push. Fontenot converted the chance before time expired and delivered one of the most dramatic finishes Miami soccer has produced in recent memory.
The goal gave Fontenot three through Miami’s first four matches, putting the freshman atop the Hurricanes’ early scoring chart. She also led Miami with three shots on goal against Lipscomb.
Miami controlled much of the match before the breakthrough.
The Hurricanes outshot Lipscomb 21-7 and put nine attempts on target. Lipscomb managed six shots on goal, while Miami also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. Sara Groseibl attempted four shots and placed two on frame as Miami continued pressing for a winner throughout the afternoon.
Goalkeeper Atlee Olofson made five saves across 90 minutes and helped Miami record its third consecutive shutout.
That defensive streak has accompanied a sharp response to Miami’s opening result. The Hurricanes dropped their Aug. 12 opener at Jacksonville 2-0 before shutting out Florida Atlantic 3-0 on Aug. 16. Miami followed with another 3-0 road victory at Little Rock on Aug. 20, then completed its road swing with Sunday’s win over Lipscomb.
The Little Rock performance also offered an early look at Fontenot’s emergence. She opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, while Caroline Hood and Kambryl Armstrong added second-half goals. Miami outshot Little Rock 16-2 and allowed only two shots over the entire match.
Sunday required a different type of performance.
Lipscomb resisted Miami’s pressure for nearly 90 minutes, forcing the Hurricanes to continue creating chances without allowing frustration to dictate the match. That persistence paid off during the final possession.
The victory moved Miami to 3-1 and completed a perfect three-match stretch away from home, with the Hurricanes outscoring FAU, Little Rock and Lipscomb by a combined 7-0.
Miami now shifts its attention toward Cobb Stadium.
The Hurricanes host Incarnate Word on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. in their 2026 home opener. After three straight road victories and three straight clean sheets, Miami returns to Coral Gables carrying momentum — plus a freshman scorer who has already shown a flair for the dramatic.
