Miami has not produced a Heisman Trophy winner since Gino Torretta in 1992, but the latest betting market now puts a Hurricanes quarterback at the front of the conversation.
Darian Mensah enters Week 3 as the shortest-priced player across major sportsbooks.
A live VegasInsider odds board Wednesday showed Mensah ranging from +480 to +600 across six books. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith followed in the +650 to +725 range, while Texas quarterback Arch Manning ranged from +750 to +850. Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney also remains firmly in the top group, with prices between +1100 and +1250. Here is the current VegasInsider Heisman board.
Mensah created the movement with two nearly flawless games.
He opened his Miami career by completing 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns in a 45-6 win at Stanford. He followed that performance with 252 yards and three touchdowns on 14-of-15 passing against Florida A&M. Through two games, Mensah has completed 41 of 45 attempts for 653 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions.
Toney has built his own case alongside him.
The sophomore broke Miami’s single-game receiving record with 234 yards at Stanford, then added 96 yards against Florida A&M. He has 16 catches for 330 yards and four touchdowns entering Friday’s game at Wake Forest.
That creates an unusual early-season Heisman dynamic for Miami.
Mensah benefits every time Toney turns a completion into a major play. Toney benefits from Mensah’s accuracy and willingness to push the ball downfield. Their production works together on Saturdays, even though award voters eventually evaluate each player separately.
The market has already reacted aggressively.
BetMGM moved Mensah from a preseason price around +1300 to +450 after two games, while Toney moved from +4000 into the +1000 range on that book after Week 2. Other sportsbooks currently offer longer numbers, which explains the range across the market.
Smith, Manning and Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr remain close enough to keep the race crowded. Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss also sits near Toney on several boards.
September odds do not decide December ballots. They measure market sentiment after a small sample, and one poor performance can move prices quickly.
Still, Miami has reached a rare position.
The Hurricanes enter Week 3 with the market’s leading Heisman candidate at quarterback and another top contender at wide receiver. Mensah and Toney will get another national television stage Friday night at Wake Forest.
If Miami’s offense keeps producing at its current pace, the weekly Heisman conversation will continue running through Coral Gables.
