Miami will enter Friday night’s trip to Wake Forest without three defensive backs from a secondary already dealing with early-season attrition.
The ACC’s initial availability report lists cornerbacks OJ Frederique Jr., Xavier Lucas and Ja’Boree Antoine out for the matchup. Tight end Luka Gilbert also remains out. Wake Forest lists wide receiver Ny Carr doubtful and quarterback Gio Lopez probable.
The Miami portion of the report creates the biggest tactical storyline. Frederique suffered a shoulder injury during the season opener at Stanford. Lucas then joined him on the sideline, and Mario Cristobal said last week that Lucas could miss about a month. Antoine has dealt with an undisclosed injury since before the season.
That removes three experienced options from a position group that expected to lean on depth in 2026.
Miami already started reshuffling against Florida A&M. Freshman JJ Dunnigan drew a start in the secondary, while Bryce Fitzgerald took on more responsibility. The Hurricanes cruised through that matchup without allowing an offensive touchdown, but Wake Forest presents a much different test.
Lopez has thrown for 575 yards and four touchdowns through two games without an interception. He also hurt Purdue with his legs, rushing for 59 yards and two touchdowns during Wake Forest’s 38-36 double-overtime win. His probable designation gives Wake Forest a strong chance to keep its starting quarterback in the lineup.
Carr’s doubtful designation could remove one familiar name from the matchup. The former Miami receiver transferred to Wake Forest after two seasons with the Hurricanes. His absence would take one option away from a Wake passing game that has already produced several explosive plays.
Carlos Hernandez still gives Lopez a proven target. Hernandez opened the season with 165 receiving yards against Akron, then caught six passes for 88 yards at Purdue.
That combination should test Miami’s communication and depth outside.
The Hurricanes can help their secondary by winning up front. Miami’s defensive line has controlled both opponents so far, and pressure on Lopez would limit the amount of time Wake Forest can attack replacement defensive backs downfield. Containing Lopez outside the pocket also matters because his mobility helped decide the Purdue game.
Gilbert’s absence carries less immediate uncertainty because Miami has already operated without him, but the defensive back losses demand attention.
The report can change before kickoff, but Miami already knows three defensive backs will not play.
Friday night will show how well the Hurricanes’ secondary depth holds up against the first experienced passing attack it has faced this season.
